Summary:

Achieving Wellness After Illness as a Teen (AWAIT), is an app-based behavioral intervention aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles – specifically targeting physical and mental health and positive health behaviors – among adolescent cancer survivors.

The app will allow participants to track their mood daily across different dimensions (e.g., anxious, happy, bored, determined) and also facilitate engagement with a coach, who will conduct phone-based weekly sessions with participants.


Full description:

Our team has pioneered an app-based behavioral intervention called Achieving Wellness After Illness as a Teen (AWAIT), aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles – specifically targeting physical and mental health and positive health behaviors – among adolescent cancer survivors. This study will test whether adolescents and their guardians will use AWAIT, a version of AWAKE adapted for an adolescent cancer survivor population and whether they will like it. We will also determine if adolescents using the program will have increased hope, quality of life and healthy behaviors (healthy diet, adequate physical activity and decreased screen time) and if any characteristics predict improved findings. The app will be used to provide educational materials, presented as a powerpoint that is recorded with voice over and a homework assignment associated with each week's topic. The app will allow participants to track their mood daily across different dimensions (e.g., anxious, happy, bored, determined) and also facilitate engagement with a coach, who will conduct phone-based weekly sessions with participants. Through the app we will send notifications and reminders to watch modules, complete homework assignments, track mood daily and reminders for upcoming coaching call appointments.
